Jim Lovell

Commander of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission

One of the most accomplished and decorated astronauts in the history of space flight, Captain Jim Lovell is perhaps best known as the commander of the now-legendary Apollo 13 mission.

Chosen as an astronaut in 1962, following extensive experience as a naval aviator and test pilot, he went on to build a distinguished NASA career, serving as a pilot on the history-making Gemini 7 flight in 1965; and being the commander of the Gemini 12 spacecraft; being the command module pilot and navigator for the epic six-day journey of Apollo 8, humanity’s maiden voyage to the moon.

His fourth and final flight was on the perilous Apollo 13 mission, in the spring of 1970. Working in co-operation with the NASA team in Mission Control, Lovell and his crew saved their own lives by successfully modifying their lunar module into an effective lifeboat when the spacecraft’s cryogenic oxygen system failed.

Their heroic journey was the subject of Lovell’s 11994 bestseller, Lost Moon, and the acclaimed Oscar-nominated film Apollo 13, starring Tom Hanks as Lovell.

Today, in addition to his consulting and speaking work, Lovell interviews top CEOs in his role as host of Executive Forum, a nationally syndicated TV program.

One of the most successful speakers in the history of the business, he has motivated, inspired, and entertained hundreds of audiences around the world.
